Chapter 122

Conrad first heard about the reemergence of the Phalanx from a civilian who'd run up to him on his patrol. Their report was a little vague, but all he needed to know was that there were people causing trouble. There were a couple from the sounds of it, so he sent a message to Barrier Maiden and Hot Rod, requesting that they start their patrol a bit early and provide backup.

As he got closer to them, he got more information from people nearby. There weren't just two - there were closer to five. He quickly decided to pull Light Master in too. Kid though he may be, he was still a capable member of the Legion.

He spent a few minutes monitoring the situation until the others arrived. There were two fights a little ways apart. Whiplash and Scattershot were one, then there was the fight between Mist and a new villain. Magnetic (at least, he assumed it was Magnetic based on the outfit) was sneaking away.

Conrad couldn't let that happen. He waited until Magnetic was far enough away that Mist wouldn't hear him and stabbed him through the back with his magic sword.

Magnetic let out a cry of pain and fell down, probably unconscious. Conrad would watch over him for now, then peel off to deal with the others once he had backup.

It didn't take long before Light Master, Barrier Maiden and Hot Rod arrived. He explained the situation briefly and Hot Rod started to run off.

"I'm going to get that bastard Whiplash," he growled, heading in the direction Conrad had pointed.

"Wait! Don't go on your own," Conrad called. Hot Rod ignored him and kept walking.

"I'll go with him," Barrier Maiden sighed. "You two can handle Mist and the new guy, right?"

"Yeah, we'll take him down," Light Master said with a laugh.

"Should we leave one of us to guard this guy?" Conrad asked, pointing to Magnetic as Barrier Maiden ran after Hot Rod.

"He's fine. I want to take down the other two," Light Master said, stepping over his body and leading the way to the fight.

Conrad followed with a sigh. Maybe he should have called in one more person, but he didn't want to disturb anyone who was on break. Theoretically, he'd hoped to handle it with just him and Light Master. Practicality won over, however, when he remembered that Light Master and Hot Rod combined hadn't been able to beat Whiplash.

Mist was still fighting the new guy. He had a weapon like Conrad's, though that one was a pair of scythes connected by a thread. He kept swinging at Mist, who dodged nimbly and occasionally countered.

Hopefully it wouldn't be too hard a fight. Knight Errant was ready with his sword.

Before they announced themselves, Light Master shot a couple beams of light at the pair. Mist seemed to have somehow noticed them and took a step back to dodge the one sent at her, while the new guy took it right in the shoulder.

"Damn! Who are you people?" he asked, glaring at them.

"Legion. Can't you tell?" Mist replied, still looking as bored as ever. "If you're gonna do this kinda stuff, at least bother to memorize who you need to watch out for."

"Stay out of this," Newbie said, glaring at Knight and Light Master. "This is between Angel and Jase."

"Good going. Now they know exactly who to go after," Mist said with a sigh. "Thanks to you, they'll be knocking down both our doors within the week."

"As if they'd manage to outsmart someone as competent as Angela!" The guy with the scythes took another swing at Mist, who bent backward so the blow flew just over her stomach.

"Go ahead, give them more info. Your bosses will appreciate it," Mist laughed. "Stupid."

"You shut it! Where's Randy?"

"Dunno."

Conrad wasn't really sure how to handle this. They seemed to be two opposing villain groups? Something about an Angel or an Angela? Or was that two separate things? Then Jase?

"We're taking you both in," Conrad said firmly, brandishing his sword. Light Master nodded and prepared for his own fight.

"Good luck," Mist chuckled. "Y'know, this might actually be kinda fun now." She jumped over another attack from Scythe Guy and spun once in midair before landing in a curtsey.

"Pay attention to me you little bitch!" Mist ducked under another blow. They really seemed preoccupied with each other, didn't they?

At least that would be better for the Legion's position. Conrad ran up and jabbed his sword into Scythe Guy's arm while Light Master peppered the area with laser shots. Mist didn't bother dodging them this time, so they just went straight through her.

"Get out of my way," Scythe Guy growled, wincing from the pain Knight's sword had inflicted. "We need to bring those traitors in."

"How about we send all of you to prison?" Conrad asked.

The other guy didn't like that. He swung both scythes at Conrad, who barely managed to dodge one and block the other. They traded blows for some time, Light Master taking shots when able.

"Knight?" he finally called.

"Yeah?" Conrad asked, parrying the red scythe.

"Mist's gone."

Of course she was. Did they expect her to just sit around and wait for them to be done with Scythe Guy?

They really needed a better name for him.

"We can look for her after we get this guy," Conrad called back. Better to get one with certainty than spread their resources thin and have everyone slip through their grasp.

"Damn all of you," Scythe Guy growled. "It was going well until you showed up." He took two more swipes at Conrad, then put the end of the two scythe handles together. They merged in a flash of purple light, turning into a shield. He bashed Conrad with it and started running.

"Get back here!" Light Master yelled, charging after him.

Conrad frowned. He had to go with Light Master for now to make sure Scythe Guy didn't grab reinforcements and cause more trouble or something, but he really wanted to check on Magnetic and try to ascertain Mist's whereabouts.

How had this gotten so complicated?
