Not Worth It

The shadows are getting longer; soon the sun will hide behind the hills. Rosa is lying down with her head resting on Marcos's thighs, who is sitting cross-legged in front of the small mound of stones. They talk about the protests that took place years ago against pharmaceutical companies, health insurance companies, and private hospitals. Gradually, greed had become the main human value in all areas of life. Marcos and Rosa had never been involved in any kind of protest or citizen movement. They lived through all the social turmoil from a distance, and Juli took them both out of the city long before everything started to fall apart. They had come here to create their own paradise on Earth, and it worked for a long time, but now Juli is gone, and Marcos wants to leave.

“It’s like back then, but now I see it clearly, Rosa. The world is full of people willing to let us die because it’s not worth it to them for us to live,” Rosa listens. “We need to be part of something where the priority is different.”

“We already are part of something, Marcos.”

“You and I alone won’t make it.”

Rosa looks at the mound of stones. Juli is gone. Juli is no longer here.
