When Galu looked around and saw his siblings for the first time he saw them for what they were. Some were wicked; some were kind. He knew that some of them would call on him for protection from the others.
He began to terraform the moon that was placed in front of him. Enormous crashing waves formed on the surface. Storm clouds rolled across it like fire through a dry plain. He called this Vai Masina. The god of protection would use the strength of the water to defend the defenseless and punish those that would do them harm. Observing Fa'avae, he saw many of these wicked beings. The Tumaoti as the humans called them would chase seafaring vehicles across the water and take what didn't belong to them. Galu wouldn't stand for this on his waters.
Any chance he had, Galu would sentence these pirates to a death at sea. The storms that he conjured would be harsh. When he felt that the offenders warranted extra discipline for their crimes he would make the storms chase them for days. The wind would blow away from their destination and they would be trapped out at sea. Until, at last, he would call down lightning upon their ship and make it the last trip they ever took.
There was nothing wrong with punishing those that preyed on the people that were weaker. Then Galu realized that is what he had been doing all along. He felt guilty and hid in the deep waters of Vai Masina. He only surfaced when someone was pleading for his protection. Whenever this happened, he always made sure to keep his power in check. Never again would he use the full force of his power to discipline humans.
This change in Galu sparked humans to begin asking for his power to protect themselves and the defenseless around them. Galu gave this power out sparingly. He wanted to ensure that anyone that was using his power was doing so in a fair way. Using his power for anything that was wicked was a quick way to lose his favor and the power that came along with it. Almost every ship that travels the waters has some sort of cleric or priest of Galu on board. To ward off storms or protect against pirates.
The change also sparked an uptick in piracy. Those that knew the god of protection wouldn't smite them because they were weaker than he was. That meant that people who became captains for the Tumaoti were usually smarter than their predecessors. They built the morale of their crews up and got people to follow them out onto the water through charismatic means. Crews are fiercely loyal to their captains. This made a need for more protection much more prevalent.
Galu was one of the few gods that visited the humans on the planet. Most of the time he would disguise himself as a very handsome man. He enjoyed walking among them and observing their behaviors. The way that they interacted with eachother was very intriguing to him. The favorite of these interactions was charity. Anytime he saw someone be charitable he would grant them a boon. They were supporting the disenfranchised and he was elated at this thought.
Conflict almost always showed up during these trips as well. Galu sought to avoid this as much as he possibly could. This couldn't always be achieved however. He was known for using magic to compel the attackers to advance against him. This was the point that he would usually reveal his true self. He would use his trident and fight a fair fight. No godlike power was used, unless it was to retaliate against someone who would use it against him. He used his sword of the sea to easily deflect the would be blows from his opponents. He usually didn't harm them though. Just made them look foolish until they left. This cost Galu dearly.
Galu had fallen in love with a woman. She was a dazzling human with fire red hair and bright blue eyes. The first time he saw her she was dropping a few coins into a beggars hat. He decided to strike up a conversation with her. "That was a very kind act," He looked at her and realized it was much kinder than he originally thought.
"I do what I can to help the people that need it more than myself." She replied with a smile.
When she spoke to him he felt a sense of ease and comfort come over him. He tried to word his next sentence very carefully, "You also need the help right now, do you not?" He hoped to not offend her with this.
"I am alive and have food to eat. That man may not have the same luxury." She was very genuine.
"Might I give you something?" Galu smiled at the woman.
"That depends what it is." She replied coyly.
Galu reached out to touch her arm. When he made contact she saw visions. A great palace on top of a large hill. The walls were very tall and made out of a most beautiful blue stone. That was when she realized she was seeing under the water. "This is my home. I would like you to join me and be my wife." He awaited her answer with anxiety.
"I...I...I cannot sir." She withdrew her arm from his grasp."I don't know you and I don't know what that vision was."
"Let me start over. My name is Vai. May I have yours?" Galu didn't like deceiving the woman, but he couldn't tell her who he really was, not yet.
"My name is Samara." She replied very unsure of her suitor.
The two spent many days together. After three (MONTHS) of this they had fallen in love. "I am sorry that I couldn't get the fish that you wanted love. The market has stopped selling many of the fish that it used to. They said that the waters were too dangerous. I heard a rumor that Galu has disappeared." When she said this Galu knew that he had been shirking his responsibilities.
"I must leave for a time my love, but I shall return." Galu left her to ensure that Vai Masina and the oceans of Fa'avae were tended to.
When he returned to the Fa'avae to find Samara no one had seen her. He searched all over her city. Finally someone from the bakery knew something. They told him that she had been seen down by the docks the last few days. When Galu made his way to the dock she was there waiting for him. "I had my suspicions that it was you, but I was never sure. Now I know that you are Galu. You left to calm our seas and the boats returned to the waters." She didn't seem mad.
"You are correct. I am sorry to have deceived you, but I didn't want you to be scared and leave me." Galu told her the truth about everything.
The two continued on for another week as if nothing had happened.
One day in the market Galu saw a large man kick a young boy. He stepped in and used his magic to compel the man to duel him. He dodged every blow and used every opening he could to throw the man on the ground. He boasted to the crowd "You see this? This is what you get for picking on someone weaker than you." He laughed and as he did it seemed to infect the crowd. They all began to laugh at the man on the ground.
The man stood up and stared into Galu's eyes as he walked away. The crowd cheered him. Apparently that man had been bullying his way around the market taking whatever he wanted. Galu felt that he had gone too easy on him, but humiliation was enough. It wasn't like he had killed anyone. He met with Samara and told her all about what happened.
After spending the rest of the day together Galu and Samara parted ways. She went home for the night and he returned to Vai Masina. He had learned how to maintain a balance between his duties and having a life as an almost mortal.
When Galu returned to visit Samara the next day he knocked on her door. A woman that he had never met answered the door. She had wild red hair and bright blue eyes. This must be Samara's mother he surmised. "What is wrong?" He asked her. She had clearly been crying.
"Samara was murdered last night." Galu fell to his knees and wept.
He didn't say another word. Standing and finding his balance he knew where to go. He headed to the market and spoke to the people that had cheered him on the day before. He found out that the person that he had defeated yesterday was named Leaga and that he could be found at the dancing bull. Galu's eyes glowed a bright blue glow. As he made his way to the tavern he began to glide across the ground. His feet had become water and it was just flowing beneath him.
He slammed the door to the tavern open and there Leaga sat. "You!" Galu growled as he pulled out his sword.
The man didn't react to his entry into the bar. Galu looked closer. There was blood on his hands and clothes. The bartender spoke up "He came in this morning and hasn't moved. Just stared."
Galu knew that the man had taken a life and couldn't comprehend what he had done. He didn't care. He poured all of his rage into his blade and drove it directly through the man's heart. As the man died in front of him he whispered into Galu's ear "Thank you."
Galu left the mortals. It was a very long time before he went back to visit them. He knew what they were capable of. He thought of Samara and thought of the generosity that humans were capable of. That memory was quickly replaced by the whisper of Leaga. Galu knew that he would never be able to remember her without also remembering him.
